The Problem Worth Solving

Every day, pet owners walk out of a vet's office having just said no to a treatment their pet needed — not because they didn't care, but because they couldn't afford it. That's the problem Pawlicy Advisor exists to eliminate.

We're a venture-backed startup building the infrastructure that connects pet owners to the right financial protection for their pets, starting with the most trusted pet insurance marketplace in the US. Pawlicy partners with thousands of veterinary practices nationwide, providing personalized, breed-specific insurance guidance directly at the point of care. delivered over 1 million unique quotes, and is  responsible for a meaningful percentage of all pet insurance sold in the US, with thousands of vets relying on Pawlicy daily. Pawlicy has raised $19M+ and is growing fast. Pawlicy has found product-market fit and now is scaling.

The Role

Location:  New York City - remote currently. Only applicants from the NYC area will be considered.

We're looking for a Senior Product Designer to own design at Pawlicy — end to end, top to bottom. You'll be a core voice in shaping our product strategy, own the design system, and be the user experience expert at a pivotal moment in Pawlicy’s growth.

You'll join a tight-knit, high-caliber product and engineering team: the Head of Product and Growth, Director of Engineering, five engineers, and a data analyst. You'll work directly with leadership, move fast, and see your work ship quickly and provide impact immediately

If you're energized by ambiguity, love owning your craft, and want your design work to genuinely improve people's lives (and their pets' lives) - this role is for you.

What You'll Own

  • Own the full design process — from discovery and research through wireframes, prototypes, and final implementation — for new and existing product features
  • Shape product strategy through user research, competitive analysis, and a deep understanding of our customers: pet parents, veterinary staff, and partners
  • Build and steward our design system, ensuring consistency and quality across every touchpoint, in close collaboration with our senior marketing designer
  • Partner closely with engineering, reviewing shipped work to ensure it meets design standards and advocating for quality at every step
  • Stay ahead of the sprint cycle — working 1–2 sprints ahead to keep pace with a fast-moving development team
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, veterinary partnerships, and other stakeholders to align design with broader company goals
  • Become a domain expert in pet insurance and pet health, with a sharp eye on industry trends and user needs

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of product design experience, with a track record of significant ownership — ideally at a Series B startup or similarly fast-paced environment
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design thinking, from research and strategy through polished, shipped UI
  • Proven experience running user research and competitive analysis independently, and translating findings into actionable product decisions
  • The confidence to push back, disagree, and realign without it becoming political — you're direct, but you bring people along! You have a clear point of view on how to solve user problems and you're not shy about advocating for it, but you are not precious
  • Experience owning or significantly contributing to a design system
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across functions — you've worked closely with engineers, marketers, and business stakeholders and know how to navigate different working styles
  • Location: New York City. This role is currently fully remote, with plans to transition to a hybrid schedule  as we accelerate our growth and open our Midtown Manhattan office in 2027. At that time, we will require New York team members to attend the office 4 days per week
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship required
  • Bonus: experience in fintech, insurtech, health, or consumer marketplaces

Extra points:  You love animals and believe pet healthcare is a serious, underserved problem. We'll hire you for your craft, but passion for the mission makes everything better.

Salary: $160,000 - $185,000 depending on experience

Equity: Startup equity grant

Vacation: Currently flexible vacation

Health: Top-tier medical, dental and vision

Retirement: 401(k) employer contributions

Mission: A real shot at reshaping how America cares for its pets

Our Hiring Process

  1. Application: Submit your resume
  2. Screener interview: one 15-minute interview with our HR Manager to discuss the role, your background and answer any initial questions you might have
  3. Hiring Manager interview: a 60-minute interview with our Head of Product & Growth
  4. Team get-to-know: 30-minute case study with our Senior Marketing Designer, as well as 30 minute interviews with our Director of Engineering and Head of Veterinary Success
  5. Final interview - a 30-minute conversation with our CEO

We try to move as quickly as we can (est 3-4 weeks)

FAQ

How does Pawlicy make money? We're a licensed insurance agency and earn a commission from insurance carriers when we help a pet parent find a plan. These commissions are already priced into insurance costs — pet owners pay nothing extra to work with us.

For how long will the role be remote? We're a small, collaborative team and we do our best work together in person.  The role is remote currently but we anticipate a return to the office (4 out of 5 days per week in 2027).  If you're in NYC, this is a great opportunity.
